When a dog decides that it is going to attack a person, the results are rarely good. Even worse, children are especially vulnerable due to their size and inability to defend themselves. We are learning of a situation in nearby Duquesne in which a man intervened after he heard two children being attacked by dogs on the loose.

“I realized the dogs look like they were attacking them and I heard the one kid screaming for help and I had to do something,” said Randy Jubak. He said that the children were at their bus stop when two dogs approached them and began barking. One of the dogs bit into a boy’s leg. Jubak grabbed a broom and began hitting the dog until it ran off.

This situation was undoubtedly scary for everyone involved, especially the kids. Thankfully Mr. Jubak was able to help, but some people are not that lucky. At Shenderovich, Shenderovich & Fishman, we know that dog bites and attacks are much more common than most people realize and often happen because of the negligence of the owners. If you need a Pittsburgh dog bite attorney, you can count on us to secure the compensation you deserve.

The Numbers

Did you know that 36% of all US households have dogs? That adds up to around 90 million pooches running around. Most of the time, these dogs are friendly and nothing happens. Other times, though, an owner’s negligence ends up allowing harm to come to someone else.

Here are some quick statistics:

  • There are nearly 4.7 million dog bites each year in the United States.
  • Almost 1 in 5 people bitten by a dog require medical attention.

Dog attacks can range in severity and no two are ever the same. Dogs have very strong jaws. Often, they bite because they are scared. Other times an aggressive dog is allowed around other people and pets, setting up a disastrous situation.

Dog bites and attacks can leave a person with major soft tissue damage that can become infected or require surgery to repair. Bites to the face are particularly devastating. They can become disfiguring and require a person to undergo plastic surgery to restore functionality and appearance.

Owners

A dog’s owner could be held liable for injuries in some of the following situations:

  • They let their dog off of a leash in a public place despite leash laws that say that is not okay.
  • They know their dog is aggressive but allow them to be around other people.
  • They do not properly secure fencing or other containment areas for their dog.
