Sometimes we need to call attention to things that are happening in order to save lives. Today, we are going to discuss how a local school group is working to improve pedestrian safety. This is an important issue because, far too often, we hear of major injuries caused by negligent drivers slamming into pedestrians.

At Shenderovich, Shenderovich & Fishman, we are ready to help you if you need a Pittsburgh pedestrian accident lawyer. Let our knowledgeable and experienced team get to work on securing the compensation you deserve.

Students For Safety

Recently, students from Pittsburgh Urban Christian School worked with PennDOT and Lively Pittsburgh to promote pedestrian safety throughout the city. They held what they call a “crossing party” to promote motorist awareness of pedestrian safety issues. Their parade is inspiring, but what they did after the parade is going a long way to help pedestrians throughout the local area.

The students walked around nearby Wilkinsburg with their iPads looking for potential hazards as part of a “walkability study.”

Pedestrian safety should be on everyone’s mind — nearly every pedestrian crash results in an injury or fatality. Pedestrians simply do not have any protection from the force of a vehicle slamming into them. What many people do not consider is that a pedestrian suffers from two impacts in a crash – one with the vehicle and one with the ground.

For the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania, there were 4,106 injuries and 150 fatalities in pedestrian crashes. Injuries from these incidents are often severe. It is not uncommon for us to see the following in the aftermath of a pedestrian crash:

  • Traumatic brain injuries/head injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries/paralysis
  • Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or amputations

Each of these injuries has the potential to temporarily or permanently disable a victim. Not only do crash victims have to contend with massive medical bills, but there is much-hidden crash cost as well:

  • Lost income if a person is unable to work while they recover
  • Any necessary rehabilitation or medical equipment costs
  • Emotional and psychological damages

All too often, we find that these crashes are caused by negligent or careless drivers. This includes those who:

  • Operate their vehicle while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Are distracted by their electronic devices
  • Willfully driver over the speed limit or violate traffic laws
